A friend of mine used to listen to digital modes via my HF radio stream. The way he accomplished this was by simply looping soundcard output back into another soundcard. That process always bugged me because it seemed like a perfectly good waste of a soundcard. :) So I came up with this... These instructions presume you're running Linux, have Fldigi and mpg321/123 installed.
First we need to make a FIFO (first in first out) file somewhere within your home directory.
mkfifo w4gpl.wav
Then we need to run mpg123 to dump the audio into the FIFO, don't worry, this doesn't take up any hard drive space.
mpg123 -w w4gpl.wav http://w4gpl.us:8000/omnivii

Then we need to configure Fldigi to use "File I/O" as the soundcard. This is done by going to Configure, Sound Card within Fldigi. Simply click the File I/O button and then Save and Close.

We're just about ready, now click on File, Audio, and then Playback within Fldigi. Uncheck the Preview button, and select your filename, in this case w4gpl.wav.

And there you have it, digital listening via remote access. You may have to select Op Mode and choose the mode you are listening to, but the Fldigi docs can get you through that process.

Happy Digital Hunting!

hey i just moved down here
hey i just moved down here from boston.. i haven't been able to get the Winter Park/ORange County police on my scanner.. what's the frequency they use? I'm in the University/Semoran area.
Thanks
mpg123 not working, but mpg321 does
FYI, i tried this using mpg123 1.4.3-4 on debian lenny without good results. Another program wasn't able to open the fifo correctly. Either fldigi or the 'play' tool. Switching to mpg321 0.2.10.6 worked right away though. Thanks for writing this up.
