"Hey dude, can I hide in your back yard, I'm running from the cops?..."

Umm, so yeah, yesterday evening was interesting, to say the least.

About an hour after my family had left my home after I had hosted Easter dinner, my roomate was out back smoking a cigarette. He runs inside and tells me to "turn on the scanner, someone just asked me they could hide in our back yard because he's running from the cops".

I immediately turned on the scanner and then ran to unlock my gun. When I ran back into the room where my scanner is, I hear our street name mentioned by the dispatcher and then no more than 3 seconds later I hear a lot of commotion that sounds like it's coming from my side yard or garage. I look out the window and I see two large cops and a dog on top of some kid who was screaming "I'm sorry, I'm sorry...".

They drag him to the front of the house and I looked out the front window to see 5 or 6 cop cars right in front of the house. I wait a few minutes, as I'm not sure if there's more than one guy they're chasing and then popped my head out the door "everything alright, officer?" -- he motioned for me to come his way, so I did... he points out they obliterated my fence gate in an effort to catch this idiot. He tells me to get it fixed, and he'll (the guy they were chasing) will be ordered to pay for it. Yeah, right. Some loser with multiple felony warrants is going to pay me back? And from what I gathered, he wasn't even responsible for the damage -- as the one cop said to me, "we don't have time to open gates".

Anyway, I'm going to get a copy of the police report, today, I hope. So I can give it to my landlord. Sure got my heart racing... can't say that happens much around these parts.

Update: Well, three cheers for the local police. They're out there now putting up a new gate. Thanks guys!

BACON! baconbaconbaconbacon...

how do you think the cops would pay for it? with taxpayer money, so either way your screwed.

bad guys?

You talk like the police are the bad guys here. Better they kick in your gate and drag the guy out, than he break your window and hold up INSIDE your house. Sounds like a job well done to me.

Who said they were the bad guys?

Way to take an take a mile when given an inch. I didn't mean to imply they were bad guys, though the notion they couldn't push open an unlocked gate rather than running through it seemed a little silly. Besides, he could have hurt himself. They took care of it for me and chasing after the guy was perfectly acceptable. No beef with the cops in this case.

What's up with the police and

What's up with the police and criminals invading backyards?! Saturday night, Nov. 1, around 11 pm I was in the kitchen looking out the back window. I see flashlights bouncing around the wooded lot behind us. As they progressively come closer, I flipped off the kitchen light so I could see what was actually happening. As it turns out, it was 2 police officers and their K-9's. We yelled out the back window asking if we could help them with anything, however we received no response. Needless to say, for my own protection(whatever?!), my husband wouldn't let me go outside to see what was happening - so that's the last we heard. I contacted the Sheriff's office Monday morning, but I was unable to obtain any information from them. Apparently, the officer was on vacation and they still haven't gotten back to me. I guess they don't have electronic files to access when officers go on vacation. I'm thinking I might have to get a police scanner.
